Craft & Sewing Tip - Don't Rush!

It's probably one of the first things we learn but it's also the mistake we make most often. The photo above shows what can happen when we rush. I remember the moment exactly.

I thought I'd quickly finish up some bags while waiting for our homemade pizzas to bake. Yes, mine was healthy. Anyway, all I had to do was add the embellishments after they were completed. It was the final step. I grabbed my paint and didn't shake it very well, I didn't have much time, because I was in a hurry. I also didn't take the time to test the paint on some scrap fabric before applying it on my little bags. BIG MISTAKE! Had I waited until after dinner when I wasn't so rushed, I would not have ended up with the face you see on the ghost to the left. Needless to say, I had to make another bag, with another hand appliqued ghost later that evening. So my rush to finish the job quickly actually took about an extra hour and a half.

Have you ever flubbed like that because you were trying to SAVE time?

Witch grouping in the image above can be be found in my "Halloween & Fall Graphic/Clipart Set" that is available at my Website, Etsy Shop, and Teacher's Notebook Shop. Links at the right.

  1. That's a good tip. It seems we are all in a rush so much of the time. Where does all the time go? What's that old saying, "the faster I go, the behinder I get." Too true sometimes.

  2. ...great old saying! Anyway, the ghost to the left is not that bad, I mean, it is more scary!

  3. Ugh...I hate when that happens! Sometimes I'll enter a wrong dimension in my laser settings and it cuts or engraves in the wrong spot...so frustrating!

  4. Great tip. I messed up an appliqued blanket for my son because I was rushing. Now it looks like a hot mess and I am so disappointed that I did not take the time to do it well.

  5. Great tip :). I mannaged to super glue my hands together a few nights ago because I was trying to get things ready for my craft fair and my glue exploded on me! Took me ages to seperate my hands properly!! I wish I hadn't been rushing!!

  6. Oh yes, I can definitely say that I have made my share of mistakes by trying to save time! Ends up taking a lot more time, that's for sure!!

  7. sometimes accidents can be happy too. i find it difficult to follow a recipe or instructions. my husband calls it challenging 'the power'. Anyhow, many of my successes are bred from accidents. but i also love abstract painting, which is a bit like your ghost ;)

  9. Oh yes, rushing is bad news for a jewelry maker. When I hurry, that's usually when I end up dropping an entire string of pearls all over the floor.

  10. Haste makes waste! I think we've all flubbed a project from trying to rush it. And ditto what Paige said!

  13. I can't remember an example, but I'm sure I have. Sometimes you spend so long on a project that toward the end you get impatient for it to be finished and do something hasty. This is a good reminder to take things slowly. Hope you have a great weekend, Sher! :)

  14. Yes! I made a dress, but didn't stop to check it against myself because just wanted to be done. Finished and it was too sizes too big!

  15. AHHHH...that stinks. I'm a very impatient person too. More likely than that, my usual mistakes involve doing something to the wet paint before it gets to dry.

  16. That has definitely happened to me, too. Always an important lesson.
