Protecting My Bubba!

We got through November, December, and the first half of January without more than a dusting of snow. Well, Thursday that all changed and we got more than a dusting. That means that the snowmobiles are out in full swing! Living out in the country means there is lots of space where the fields are now bare, and that means lots of space for the snowmobiles.

Last year some very RUDE snowmobiles cut through our yard to get to the road. There were two entry ways between trees that they were able to access our yard from the farm field behind. If you look at the picture above you can see where they crossed our yard. Look closer and you will see a shoveled path in the yard. That is the path that we shovel for Bubba (our tiny little yorkie) so he can go potty. See how the snowmobile cut across Bubba's path? That happened about 5 minutes after I brought him in from outside! I know this because I saw the lights in my backyard, then the path appeared. I was furious! I always go out with him because we do have wildlife that would probably eat him if they got the chance. But how would I stop a snowmobile? They would never see him out there.

So anyway, Brian and I went out there Saturday and pulled huge logs and branches across the entry ways (between the trees), posted NO TRESPASSING signs at each one, and stuck 10 (total) reflectors in front of it all. I hope that keeps them out. It's bad enough I have to worry about the coyotes!

  1. Those sledders would certainly plow little Bubba over! Snowmobiles ARE machines. I hope the branches, logs, signs and reflectors keep them out of your yard and away from the path. I hope the coyotes stay away, too! My best friend in Alaska lost her little Pomeranian last winter when a moose trampled her in their yard. So sad.

  2. That should keep them out! We've been seeing more coyotes around here the last few years, too. Luckily our dog is too big to be eaten!

  3. Those jerks! I hope the signs work to keep them out. Is there anything else you can do about it, or are you "stuck" just putting up signs?

  4. That is just so rude of them, I hope the logs and signs work! We live in the country also, and we have our daughter's little Yorkie/Maltese staying here. We always go outside with her and have to shovel a path as well... Things can happen so quickly with all the wildlife around, you do have to worry about that, but to have to worry about big snowmobiles also... TERRIBLE!

  5. Thats so scary. As soon as I read the part about your yorkie using the path I thought what if he gets hit! Hopefully putting up the logs prevents any more snowmobiles. We haven't had any snow here in Charlottesville.

  6. Aww, Bubba definitely needs some big logs to keep the snowmobilers out! Hope your strategy works.

  7. I would be furious too! That was a good idea, putting out the logs and reflectors (people are usually blind to signs - they're going too fast!) I'd throw some nails in the brush! {:-D

  8. My mom had this same problem at her house only they would run over her expensive dwarf lilac bushes and kill them, so she put cinder blocks out where they would go across her yard. After picking up snowmobile parts the next day they never did it again!

  9. That is awful that you have trespassers like that. I hope that the signs, branches, and reflectors helped!

  10. How rude! I hope the logs and signs and reflectors send them a crystal clear message to stay off your property.

  11. It's probably teenagers or something, but you're right that that could be really dangerous! Not just for your precious yorkie, but for you too. They probably shouldn't be riding them at night at all, much less through other people's yards.

  12. That's scary thinking that Bubba could have been out there when they went through. It's rather rude of them to cut through your yard as well. We live in town and snowmobiles are not allowed on the streets so they cut through yards to get to the railroad tracks. They don't go through ours but they do cut through the empty lot next to us.

  13. Sometimes people go beyond rude to dangerous. Hopefully you have discouraged them from bothering you again.
