My New Job Commute - Across the Hall!

When I first started listing my graphics and patterns at my very first shop, I never thought I'd sell enough of them to actually quit my day job. Two and a half years, over a dozen shops, and a several thousand sales later, I have finally reached that point and have made that silly little dream a reality! Some might say that it takes a lot of hard work to run a business, which it does, but it's FUN work!

Friday will be my last day at the animal clinic. I will miss the people and the job, but I felt as though I was holding down two jobs. It was so stressful and left me with very little time for anything else, plus I know that if I can focus on my business more completely, I can make it grow even more. Plus, I can keep a flexible schedule and even take vacations and long weekends anytime I want! Most importantly, I can spend more time with my family. Brian is happiest about that part.

When I gave my notice last month I was asked if I'd like to come back once in a while to fill in if someone needs a day or two off. They don't ask too many people if they'd like to stay on that way so it made me feel like my work there was really appreciated. It will also be nice to help out my co-workers when they need some time off.

So the photo above is my studio where I will spend my time creating along with my trusty assistant Punkie.

So, to my friends who have been running their business on a full time basis, I'd really appreciate any tips or advice to keeping a schedule, organization, or anything that will help me. I'm taking all the advice I can get.

I'm so excited about beginning this whole new chapter in my life!

  1. Congratulations!!! They'll miss you at the clinic, but how nice that they've asked you to fill in. I'm sure you'll be crazy busy with your pattern business leading up to the holidays.

  2. Congratulations, I am very happy for you! Vacations and long weekends are a great incentive. I work as a freelance translator and cannot even think of a full-time job now. I am really glad for you and wish you an even greater success! Cannot give any tips on organization - I just sit and work and then do some exercise and work again... and I sleep in the daytime. And I break my work into portions counting back from deadline bt it is not relevant for you I guess. Anyway, I am sure you will be very happy and successful.

  4. Hi Sheryl,
I really wish you a happy and productive chapter of your life! I left my teaching full time job two years ago to devote myself fully to my art. Never regret my decision since!

  7. That's wonderful news! It's my dream too, how much fun would it be to be able to work in your pajamas? Well, I could do that now too, but I guess it would be frowned upon :-)

  8. Congratulations! You have no idea how much I relate to this post. I am on the verge of quitting my day job and going full time with my business. By April at the latest! Working the equivalent of 2 full time jobs makes me feel a bit crazy and my social life is lacking. How brave of you having a feline assistant. My kitties are not allowed in my office while working since cats really, really love beads and stringing material! Enjoy the start of this new chapter!

  11. Congratulations! I wish you all the best. It's so hard sometimes to make that transition to "quit your day job". Mine's robbing me of alot of time to create my jewelry, but I need that weekly paycheck.

  13. Congratulations to you!! How exciting Sher, I'm very happy for you! Many happy wishes on your new journey!!!

I just recently made the decision to do my clay-work full time. It's been an adjustment... Time seems to disappear while I work, and I'm still figuring out how to schedule my days, but I LOVE it, and feel very blessed that I can do it!!!
