Inspiration - When Creations Tell the Story

As every creative person knows, it not only takes talent to create, it also takes inspiration. Some times you can be inspired by something common and obvious, but sometimes you can be taken completely by surprise. Did you know that some of my patterns and designs were inspired by special things? Some of them even have little stories behind them. I thought it would be fun to fill you in on what's behind some of my favorite and most popular patterns.

Working so many years at an animal clinic, I've been lucky to be a part of treating wildlife as well as cats and dogs. One of the greatest experiences of my work there was raising and rehabbing owls. Howard was a special owl and the only one we named because he was so awesome. You can read about him here. If you want to see what a barn owl looks like from baby to adult, Click here, and trust me, it will be worth it. The transformation is amazing!

You will also notice that you will see a lot of cats in my designs, and many of them are black. That's because my "assistant" who has been with me for eighteen years is a black cat.

Then there is Bubba. We had a little Yorkie who has since passed. He was such a special little guy, but he had so many medical problems. He was a little trooper. He was a little guy with a HUGE personality, and a lot of love to give. He is the inspiration behind the dog that is a part of my new logo, and the Fluffy Dog Key Fob Design and Fluffy Dog Mini Zipper Bag. I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot more of Fluffy Dog in patterns down the road.

My obsession love of tea has inspired many of my tea designs. Must be the British blood running through my veins!

I can't forget about the Hot Air Balloons and the Camping Collection. My husband and I love to take long weekends away. One of our favorite places to go is to Battle Creek, Michigan for their Hot Air Balloon and Air Show. If you ever get the chance to go to one, I highly suggest it. As for the camping collection, it was inspired by my new found fascination with camping. I was never really a camper, but hey, I am a Nana, and my granddaughter loves it, so I will love it too!

There are so many things that inspire me. It can be something as simple as a color. Many times it's something that I truly love and want to share with you in my creations. If I put them all here, you would be bored and probably fall asleep reading.

What inspires you to create the things you create?

FREE Mug Rug of the Month Patterns

What's a better way to kick off the new year than with a whole year of mug rugs? Nothing I can think of. Well, I'm sure there are better ways for life in general, but when it comes to sewing, this must be up at the top five.

A couple years back I did a collaboration with Mayra at So Sew Easy. It was a lot of fun and Mayra is such a pleasure to work with. I designed a mug rug for each month and they can all be found on her website. If you aren't familiar with her website, you will want to bookmark it so you can refer back to it often. So many fun and informative things!

Below is the link to the Pinterest Board where I have them all saved. Just click on the one (or ones) and it will take you to So Sew Easy where you will find the instructions and the link to the PDF templates, which are also available at my PDF Pattern Shop Craftsy.

If you don't want to download them all right now, no worries, as long as you follow my blog (link at the right), I'll remind you during the first week of each month that there is one available!

A Look Ahead with Sher's Creative Space

I've never been one for resolutions because I never keep them. When it comes to the important things in life, I prefer to make changes, plans, and set goals. To me, it just makes more sense. When you set goals, you don't say, "This year I'm going to............(fill in the blank)." I know that when I set goals for myself or my business, I come up with a plan, a strategy, a plan of attack. It takes thought, patience (sometimes), energy, organization, and a positive attitude. So I'm sharing with you, a couple things that you will be seeing in the next year for Sher's Creative Space and In the Hoop by Sher.

• BACK TO BLOGGING: This past year I've gotten behind in my blogging. I really missed writing as well as visiting my writing friends. So, each week I will announce my Weekend Freebie right here on the blog, as well as writing informative articles and tutorials. I will also enjoy visiting my favorite creative blogs.

• CUSTOM EMBROIDERY PATTERNS: This is something I'm going to start doing at some point this year. I'm not going to get into anything complex such as logos, but I've got a start on various templates where I will fill in with your items. I've done a little of this recently for personal situations and I really enjoyed it. A couple of the items were so touching, that it brought tears to my family's eyes. The ideas are up there, spinning around in my head, it's just a matter of getting it all organized for presentation, pricing, etc.

I do have some other ideas in the works, but let's just start with these two things for now. The last thing I want to do is overwhelm myself!
