If Walls Could Talk

Do you ever go past an old abandoned house and ask yourself a million questions about it? I do! I'm actually fascinated by them. I wonder what the people were like who lived there, when was the house built, and how did it become vacant? Did the owner's lose it to the bank, did they die, did they just walk away from it? Were there kids and pets, and did they have parties out in the yard? Did they have electric when they first moved in, or was that added later? And most of all, I wish I could go inside to see if any of that old charm is still there. As we all know, they don't make houses like they used to.

This is an old house that I pass on my way to and from work. I know nobody lives there because the windows are out and I never see life or cars. I do question the lawn. It's neatly mowed all summer long. I wonder if it's the owner who does it, and why keep up the yard and not the rest of the house? You can't tell by looking at the picture, but the house sits on an amazing property! It's out in the country and there are no close neighbors. After looking at the photo I can see that roof actually doesn't look that bad. I wonder if this house is savable.

Breaking and entering is not for me, so now I'll just drive by and wonder...

  1. Like so many vacant homes, the owners may be waiting for the market to get better before putting it up for sale. If it does go up for sale, you MUST act like a buyer and take a tour!

  2. I do like to make up stories about old homes and buildings. The gym is downtown and as I drive off, I find myself looking at the old buildings and imagining what went on in them years ago.

  3. It is very interesting, and probably a great property on which to live and have a large workshop/studio.

  4. Once when I was a kid, a friend and I found an old, abandoned house in the woods. It had partially burned in a fire. We enjoyed walking around through what was left and wondering about it. I think it's sad to see a house fall into disrepair. It does make you wonder why.

  5. I also love abandoned houses & buildings. There is a certain beauty about structures in a state of decay.

  6. That is funny that they keep the lawn mowed when the house is falling in. Maybe they do have plans of saving it???

  8. I hope someone is able to save it. The farm house where I grew up is now abandoned. Very sad.

  9. That is the same thing my grandmother always did when she passed old barns. I used to draw the barns for her to hang on her wall.

  10. I do the same thing! There's a historic district in town and occasionally one of those will be empty for one reason or another, and I just want to know what the heck happened! It's usually a really cool house that's neglected for a while, and I always wonder...

  11. I do that all the time. I pass a couple abandoned houses and I've wondered the exact same things about them. There are also a few older houses that are run down and I wonder about how grand they must have looked when they were new.

  12. Old houses like these are so fun to wonder about! And the yard still being kept up is quite interesting. So now you've got ME wondering, and I don't pass by this house at all...

  13. You might need to investigate further with that one! I'm obsessed with abandoned barns. They're so mysterious and often creepy, but I love to look around at them. Whenever I would pass houses out in the country from the highway on the way back from my college town, I'd wonder why there were such old, run down barns next to beautiful, up kept houses!

  14. There is one particular house here from the art nouveau period that has been empty for decades. Whenever I walk/drive past I wonder about it. I so want to go inside!! In fact, I'd love to live there ;-)

  15. It's so interesting to think about that kind of thing! Maybe just a squatter who moved in and is maintaining it to try to get squatters rights, eh?
